Life-Tough, Death Defying

Boris Yukhananov’s The Constant Principle resembles a "centaur," which, in its eclectic, polysyllabic body, connects what seemingly cannot be connected. There are various musical genres here, from delicate opera arias to pop hits like "Mochalkin Blues," along with all kinds of dance, from waltzes to the Brazilian capoeira, as well as endless dialogues with theatrical tradition... But it's not so much the riot of color, sound and movement that is important – all of this initially merely outlines the vectors of Pedro Calderon's play. Subsequently, the performance gradually begins leaping out of the play in crazy somersaults, going further and further from the text, in order, eventually, to create a new reality on stage. Ultimately, vampires and zombies make merry, cavorting with the mutated remnants of the text.
